Lore of Beyond the Clouds

Backstory:
10,000 years ago, ancient civilizations thrived upon technology powered by the Thunderstone.
One day, Babylon, the leader of the Colossus, went haywire and flew into a blinding rage, sending the Colossus and the ancient people into a civil war that enveloped the entire continent.
10,000 years later, this internecine struggle continues unabated, with the technology dependent citizens of Aerotopia and the nature-worshiping Forest Tribe constantly at each other's throats.
When the fleet of Aerotopia breached the ruins, Babylon was awakened and the mysterious young woman who had accompanied it in its slumber was awoken as well...

Aetheria
A "1,000-Isle Kingdom" that sank many moons ago, this floating continent lies suspended in the Cloud Sea.

Cloud Sea
When the ancient continent split apart, the seas surged forth and merged with the azure sky to form the Cloud Sea. Particulates of the Thunderstone lie suspended in this Cloud Sea, rendering all marine life capable of flight. Soaring through this place is reminiscent of whipping through a vast, infinite miasma of fog.

Thunderstone
A magic crystal that acts as a superconductor and is capable of bestowing the gift of levitation. It is the wellspring of all magic and technology, and single-handedly allows both the continent of Aetheria and the Cloud Sea to suspend in mid-air.

Colossal Warriors
A group of warrior colossi created by the ancient civilization. They are powered by the Thunderstone.

Forest Tribe
A collective formed by all the respective aboriginal groups living in the forests on many different floating islands. They insist on utilizing only traditional magic and hold out hope that one day the power of World Tree will restore Aetheria to its former glory.

Ruins
They are left behind after the apocalyptic catastrophe suffered by the old continent. Found deep under the earth's surface, they also appear during storms manifested from the Thunderstone. They contain the most cutting-edge technology of the ancients: equipment meant to purify the Thunderstone.

Aerotopia
A flying city composed primarily of metal built upon a few colossal boulders imbued with the power of the Thunderstone. Possess a lethal fleet of offensive airships.

Xavier - A commander in Aerotopia's assault team who has ancestral ties to the forest.
His mother came from Aerotopia, and his father from the Forest Tribe. His childhood was spent in the Colossal Warrior Forest. It was here that he first met Edith, and the two of them became quick friends.
Upon the death of his mother, Xavier was taken back to Aerotopia by his grandfather, whereupon he lost all contact with Edith. Brainwashed and indoctrinated by his grandfather, Xavier forgot all about the wonder and beauty of his child and became a commander in the assault team.
During a confrontation with the Forest Tribe, in a most unusual reunion, Xavier's airship was scuttled by Edith.
The injured Xavier was brought back to the forest to recuperate, and in the course of his recovery, he remembered everything. Upon his return to Aerotopia, he unveiled the secret of his origins to everyone. Still feeling he owed a debt to his former home, he ordered his men to search the ruins for the ancient source of the Thunderstone in order to save Aerotopia.

Edith - A young female tribal chief whose lineage had ties to both Aerotopia and the Forest Tribe.
Edith was born in Aerotopia, but was sent tumbling into the Cloud Sea after an airship accident in her childhood. A skywhale saved her and took her to the Colossal Warrior Forest, where the tribal chief gave her the name Edith.
Of all the people she encountered, Xavier was the only one willing to break past her taciturn shell and get to know her.
After the death of the tribal chief, Edith commandeered an ancient mecha called Marduk to fend off an invasion from Aerotopia. Her grit and valor led to her being nominated the new tribal chief.
In one of the clashes with Aerotopia, Edith took out a ship that Xavier was commanding. Plucking him from the wreckage of the plummeting ship, Edith took him back to the forest to recuperate, and their friendship was reignited once again.
After learning of Xavier's plan to explore the Ruins, Edith frantically rushed in an attempt to stop him, for she knew that was where a terrible force resides: The Enders.

Kagura - A young woman who has remained dormant for over 10,000 years. She is the only one capable of subduing Babylon.
10,000 years ago, Kagura's father created Babylon. In its core, he embedded a line of code: always protect Kagura.
Undertaking a great risk, the ancient people took the unstable and ultra-purified Thunderstone and implanted it inside Babylon. This gave Babylon an inhuman awareness. Kagura was eventually able to pacify the out-of-control Babylon, and together they fell into a deep slumber.
Kagura would regularly re-awaken to subdue the restless agitations of Babylon before once again falling back to sleep. As the years flowed by, Kagura witnessed the vicissitudes of time immeasurably change the world through the countless fallen Colossi.
When Xavier and Edith arrived at the Ruins, they found themselves being inexorably drawn into the Thunderstone's all-consuming vortex. In the course of leading them out of this storm, Babylon awakened.
After a fierce pitched battle, the three succeeded in pacifying Babylon once more.
Having secured another victory for the good of the world, Kagura, Xavier and Edith bid each other farewell. Kagura prepared to enter an extended sleep once again.

Appendix: Ballad of the Forest Tribe

The Cloud Sea
In your eyes,
I can see the future,
shining like the turquoise Cloud Sea.

You, so enraptured by flight,
would never betray the blue sky.
I, forever a dreamer,
will always be there, gazing up as you fly.

We're destined to be together, you and I, flying hand-in-hand in the Cloud Sea. The skywhales sing their song,
filling us with joy and courage.

We're destined to be together, you and I.
Look me in the eye.
My laughter and my tears are yours, and I will always be with you.

In your eyes,
I can see the future,
shining like the turquoise Cloud Sea.
Quick, give me a sign of your love, and remember my smile,
shining like the turquoise Cloud Sea.
